Seasons, travel & timeline

What to know before you pick a date in the Methow Valley.

Seasons

Choosing your season

Most Methow weddings happen from late May through early October. Normals below are for Winthrop (NOAA 1991–2020 climate normals); Mazama runs a bit cooler and snowier, Twisp and Pateros a bit warmer.

Wildfire smoke

Late summer can bring smoke from regional fires. Pick a venue with an indoor or enclosed backup, keep an eye on air quality, and know the venue's fire and open-flame rules during burn bans.

Big temperature swings

A 35–40°F drop from afternoon to night is normal. Plan heaters or wraps for evening receptions and shade and water for afternoon ceremonies.

Winter weddings

Snowy, quiet and beautiful, with indoor venues like lodges and the Winthrop Barn. Guests will drive in from the south or east, since the North Cascades Highway is closed.

Getting here

Travel & logistics

  • From Seattle: about four hours to Winthrop via the North Cascades Highway (SR 20) when it is open, per Sun Mountain Lodge. Otherwise allow extra time via Stevens Pass and US 97.
  • North Cascades Highway (SR 20): closes for winter each year, usually in November or December, and reopens in spring, sometimes not until May or later. Dates vary every year; see WSDOT's historic closure dates (opens in new tab).
  • Nearest commercial airport: Pangborn Memorial Airport (EAT) (opens in new tab) in Wenatchee, roughly 2½ hours by car via US 97 and SR 153 through Pateros.
  • From Spokane: about three hours, per Sun Mountain Lodge.
  • On the ground: cell service can be spotty and rideshares are scarce, so plan shuttles and share printed directions.

Licenses & permits

  • Apply with the Okanogan County Auditor; both partners should be present, or use a notarized application.
  • Fee: $159, cash or money order (no personal checks).
  • 3-day waiting period; the license is valid for 60 days and only in Washington.
  • No residency requirement, blood test or witnesses needed to apply.

Alcohol at your event

A licensed caterer like Twisp River Catering handles bar service under its own license. If you host self-provided alcohol at a public place or business, Washington generally requires a $25 per-day banquet permit from the Liquor and Cannabis Board for private, invitation-only events. Alcohol must be free to guests and bought at retail. Many halls require one, so check with your venue.

Timeline

A 12-month planning timeline

  1. 12+ months out

Pick a season and guest count, set your budget, tour and book your venue, and book your planner and caterer.

  2. 9–12 months

Reserve lodging blocks, book your photographer, florist and officiant, and send save-the-dates with travel notes.

  3. 6–9 months

Rentals (tents, tables, lighting), music, hair and makeup, and transportation or shuttles.

  4. 3–6 months

Lock your menu and bar package, send invitations, and plan your rehearsal dinner and welcome events.
